What is customization vs personalization?

Within the world of design and UX, customization and personalization are two very different things.  Customization occurs when a user manually makes changes to an item or experience. Personalization, on the other hand, is when users are automatically served tailored website experiences based on certain characteristics and behaviors they’ve previously shared/shown. 

Why is personalization so important?

When done well, personalization allows you to create tailored website experiences that resonate with your core users. Not only does this let you improve engagement on your website, but it also helps you hit your primary business objectives, such as increasing sales or expanding your user base. 

What is an example of personalization?

There are several types of personalization, ranging from 1-to-1 personalization to 1-to-many.  1-to-1 personalization is when each user is served a completely different experience based on their unique profile. For example, on video platforms like youtube, each user will be shown a personalized list of recommended videos based on the kinds of videos they’ve watched in the past.  1-to-many personalization – commonly known as segmentation – is where certain users are bucketed together based on shared characteristics, and this group of users is then served tailored experiences based on these characteristics.  For example, maybe you decide to segment your website users based on whether they’re returning customers or new visitors. You may then choose to show returning users the message ‘Welcome back – here are some products we think you’ll like based on past purchases’, while showing new users a completely different message that’s better suited to their circumstances.
