Conversion rate optimization FAQs

What is conversion rate optimization?

While SEO and paid advertising focus on driving new streams of traffic to your website, Conversion Rate Optimisation (CRO) is the practice of guiding users who are already on your website towards taking a desired action, such as filling out a contact form, signing up for your newsletter, or completing a purchase. There are a number of different ways to perform CRO, but we as an agency adopt an iterative approach. This means that we run a/b tests on your website to see how different kinds of changes impact your conversion rates. From there, we then analyse the test results to unearth insights about your users, and we use these findings to inform future rounds of testing. This scientific approach, paired with our state of the art frameworks and technologies, allows us to progressively optimise your website to drive the maximum number of conversions possible.

How do you calculate a website’s conversion rate?

The conversion rate of a website is calculated by dividing the number of conversions by the total number of visitors. For example, if you get 100 conversions per month and 1000 visitors per month, then your conversion rate would be 10%.

What is a good conversion rate?

There are so many factors that contribute to a website’s conversion rate that it isn’t always possible to say what a good conversion rate actually is. For example, what industry is your website in? B2B service websites tend to have a significantly lower conversion rate than ecommerce websites. Likewise, how is your website structured? Do you have lots of high-traffic blog content, because if so, your website’s conversion rate is likely to be low even if other parts of your website convert well.   When we run a CRO program for our clients, we’re less concerned about hitting arbitrary benchmarks and more focussed on relative progress: are we improving the conversion rate and allowing our clients to hit their targets? This is the important thing.

What is conversion rate optimisation (CRO)?

Conversion rate optimisation (CRO) is the practice of guiding users on your website towards taking a desired action (known as a ‘conversion’), such as submitting a contact form or completing a purchase.

Why is CRO important?

Your website exists to perform a certain function, whether that be to generate sales, maximise signups, improve engagement, or something else. In a nutshell, CRO is the process of improving your website’s ability to perform this function, so that your business can hit its goals.

How does conversion rate optimization work?

There are a number of different ways to improve a website’s conversion rate. Our approach – and the approach likely to achieve the best results in the long-term – involves running a/b tests to see how different changes impact the conversion rate. To simplify things somewhat: when a change has a positive impact on the conversion rate, we roll it out to 100% of the traffic; when it has a negative impact, we revert back to the original. In this way, we’re able to progressively optimize our clients’ websites to ensure that their conversion rates are always improving.

SEO vs CRO: what’s the difference?

Search engine optimization (SEO), in essence, is the practice of optimizing your website to rank well on search engines, with the ultimate goal of increasing qualified traffic to your website. Conversion rate optimization (CRO), on the other hand, is geared towards creating web experiences that guide users who are already on your website towards a desired action. In other words, SEO is about getting people onto your website, CRO is about getting them to do something when they’re there.
